Welcome Squirt/10u Hockey Players to your first year of competitive hockey!!
You can look forward to a lot of fun – 12 to 14 full ice games, 2 to 3 tournaments (home and/or out of town).
We know it is only the beginning of summer but before you know it, it will be back to the arena.
Hopefully we will answer some of your questions about this step up to Squirt/10u hockey, especially for those of you without an older brother or sister in hockey. The girls have the option of playing with the Squirts or with the 10u co-op team in St. Michael.
First your parents need to register you online before July 1
st at
www.starsicehockey.org. Yes, that’s the middle of summer but by August 1
st we have to tell Minnesota Hockey how many teams we will have so they can begin to set game schedules.
At the beginning of September, we will hold a month long pre-season Squirt clinic, 2 to 3 one hour on ice sessions per week. This allows you to get your legs and skills ready for tryouts and the regular season.
In the past Stars Youth Hockey have had enough skaters for 3 Squirt teams (maybe 4 this year) – an “A”, “B” and “C” which divides the skaters by their skill level. That division of skaters is done by way of tryouts held over a three or four day period at the beginning of October. The tryouts make sure that you will be skating with and against skaters of equal skill, which makes the season more enjoyable for you and your parents.
On the last day of tryouts you will be assigned to a team and coach. Regular season practices start within a week and you will be on the ice about 3 times a week including games and scrimmages. You must keep up with your school homework to skate. The real fun and excitement starts in December with District sponsored games! Or your team may start with a tournament in November!
This last paragraph is for your parents so you can skip this and hand the letter over to your parents. We hope to see you at “The Moose”!
The Squirt/10u program is one of the most enjoyable levels of youth hockey for both the skater and their families. It will generate memories that will last a lifetime. But there is an increase cost to this level due to the increased time on the ice. The total cost will average about $750 to $900 for the season but 1st year Squirt families can earn up to a $300 discount through additional volunteer hours. Those volunteer hours can be earned at games, tournaments, special events, coaching, board positions, bingo, etc throughout the year.
A Squirt level meeting will be held during the first week of the pre-season clinic to give more detail information or you may contact any board member, listed on the website under Contacts, with questions.
